No–Dig Drain Repair Experts
If your pipes are blocked, the cause is often root intrusion, hardened concrete or other stubborn obstructions. Traditionally, resolving these issues meant costly and disruptive excavation.
Robotic pipe cutting is an advanced, unintrusive method that uses remote-controlled equipment to remove obstructions from within pipes, without the need for excavation. This technology is ideal for tackling tough blockages such as tree roots, concrete or displaced liners. It’s also commonly used in pipe rehabilitation projects, particularly for reopening lateral connections after drain relining.
At Metro Rod, we’ve made significant investments in state-of-the-art robotic cutting equipment capable of operating in pipe diameters ranging from 55mm to 800mm. Our robotic cutters are designed to grind, mill and cut through even the most stubborn materials, all while navigating bends and vertical sections of pipework with precision.
How Robotic Cutting Works
When there is a blockage in a drain that can’t be removed by jetting, it’s often easier to remove the blockage by cutting and grinding it to a manageable size for removal. Robo cutting is a highlight specialised technique that uses remote-controlled machinery to do so. The process is precise, efficient, and ideal for situations where traditional methods fall short and would typically follow these steps:
- Once we have been contacted to discuss your blockage, a drainage engineer will visit your property to assess the issue.
- A CCTV drain survey is typically carried out to identify the cause and location of the blockage. Based on the survey, the team will determine if robotic cutting is the most effective solution.
- Our specialist team will deploy robotic cutting equipment tailored to your pipe size and blockage type, and the cutter will grind, mill or cut through the obstructions.
- A follow-up CCTV survey ensures that the blockage has been fully cleared and the pipe is in good condition. If further work is required, it will be discussed.
- You’ll receive a summary of the work completed and the site is left clean and operational with minimal disruption.

Robotic Cutting FAQs
How to clear blocked pipes?
How much does it cost to remove roots from drain pipes?
The cost to remove roots from drain pipes can vary depending on the severity of the blockage, the location and the method used. Robotic cutting is often more cost-effective than excavation. For a more accurate quote, at Metro Rod, we will carry out a CCTV survey to assess the issue and recommend the best solution.
Is robotic cutting suitable for residential properties?
Absolutely. Robotic cutting is a non-invasive solution that works well in both residential and commercial drainage systems, minimising disruption to your property.
How long does robotic cutting take?
Most robotic cutting jobs can be completed within a day, depending on the severity and location of the blockage. It’s a faster alternative to excavation-based repairs.
Will I need a CCTV drain survey before robotic cutting?
Yes, in most cases a CCTV survey is typically carried out first to diagnose the blockage and determine whether robotic cutting is the most suitable solution.
