As part of a new series, we take a closer look at the towns we spend so much time in and we're beginning with our closest town: Bicester
First things first, how do you pronounce the name? We hear our town being mentioned on the national radio, usually being read out from a text and so often we pause and wait to hear the stumble on the presenters tongue as they refer to "Bye- sester", when in fact it is pronounced "Biss-ter". So now you know!
On to some more facts about Bicester!
- Bicester is mentioned in the Doomsday book in 1086, though it is referred to as Berencestra
- The population as of the 2011 census stands at 32,642, though is undoubtedly greater due to the sustained growth over the last 7 years
- The biggest draw to Bicester is the world famous outlet store Bicester Village
- Bicester is home to the UKs first Eco-Town, an ever growing new development that is good for everyone residing there, including the wildlife!
- The oldest listed building in Bicester is St Edburgs church, which has a long history in town spanning 900 years!
- The jewel in the crown of Bicesters parks and green spaces is Garth Park, a former hunters lodge that is now the home to Bicester Town Council
- Bicester Airfield is home to Windrushers Gliding Club, but in the past it was the base for RAF Bicester
