Apprenticeships: Skills for Life!

Apprenticeships: Skills for Life!

Our Apprenticeship Scheme

Metro Rod’s apprenticeship scheme is dedicated to drainage, endorsed by CABWI. It includes 35 internal courses and 12 external courses, making it the most comprehensive apprenticeship in the drainage industry.

By not relying on colleges for training, we offer two significant career development advantages:

  1. Tailored Training: Our training is customized to develop multi-skilled drainage specialists. Experienced drainage technicians and business owners serve as mentors.
  2. Workplace Learning: Training occurs on the job, addressing real-time issues.

The scheme is divided into three phases:

Skills for Life

Apprentices at Metro Rod develop a range of valuable skills that benefit both their professional careers and everyday life:

  • Problem-Solving: Diagnosing and resolving drainage issues sharpens critical thinking and analytical abilities.
  • Teamwork and Communication: Collaborating with experienced engineers and team members enhances these essential skills.
  • Technical Proficiency: Using specialized equipment and software, such as iTouch for CCTV data, builds technical expertise applicable across various fields.
  • Safety and Responsibility: Emphasizing safe work practices fosters a strong sense of responsibility and attention to detail.
  • Time Management: Balancing on-the-job training with coursework cultivates effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Adaptability: Handling diverse tasks, from emergencies to routine maintenance, helps apprentices become adaptable and flexible.
  • Customer Service: Providing high levels of customer service hones interpersonal skills and professional customer interactions.

These skills not only prepare apprentices for successful careers in the drainage industry but also equip them with essential life skills.

Our Apprentices: Past and Present

Gethin: Our first apprentice, Gethin, worked as a drainage engineer for two years after his apprenticeship and a year as a general assistant. He now serves as our CCTV Administrator, leveraging his experience with iTouch software. Gethin occasionally visits job sites to handle complex tasks or provide support.

Callum: Starting as an apprentice in 2021, Callum continues as a drainage engineer assistant. He assists our tanker operatives, handling emergencies, blockages, and maintenance tasks. Callum enjoys mastering complex tasks and often works independently.

Charlie: In his second year as an apprentice, Charlie is gaining hands-on experience. He will transition to a drainage engineer assistant role this September, continuing to build his expertise and contribute to the team. Charlie is excited about his future at Metro Rod.

“Investing in apprenticeships is investing in the future. By nurturing young talent, we not only build a skilled workforce but also inspire innovation and growth within our industry. Every apprentice brings fresh perspectives and energy, driving us towards a brighter tomorrow.”
Ben Witcomb, Managing Director of Metro Rod Newport, Hereford, Gloucester and Cardiff.
