COPING WITH COLD WEATHER AND DRAINS – METRO ROD NORTH LONDON

With the winter weather well underway you’ll have already felt the icy chills, but have you wondered what this means for your drains?

As experts in drain care, Metro Rod North London know that the cold winter weather can seriously damage your drainage system. When the water left in your drain pipes freezes over it will expand inside in the pipes. The expanding ice puts pressure within your drains and pipes causing them to crack and fracture. This is damaging to the overall structure as well as causing leaks when the ice starts to thaw out.

Here is some advice to help your drains cope with the cold weather to keep them fully functioning without problems this winter.

Unblock Drains

Over winter and autumn a lot of leaves and other debris can fall and make their way into your drains. The blockage can act as a dam, preventing any water from draining away. There is more chance that this water, as it is held in place, will freeze and then cause more problems damaging your drains.

Keep Drains and Pipes Warm

To help prevent ice from forming inside and outside of your drains you should try and keep them as warm as possible. You might think keeping the heating on in your home or business will be costly, but keeping it on a low temperature regularly can be more efficient compared to ‘stop-start’ periods of heating. Investing in insulation to wrap around the exterior of your pipes, can greatly decrease the likely hood of frozen pipes. You can find relatively cheap and effective insulation in most DIY shops, the circular foam tubing works well as you can just place it around the pipes. Heat tape is a second option that you might find works well.

Outdoor Drain Pipes

If you have any hosepipes outside you should store them inside or somewhere warmer. As with any taps around your house outside, try and close the indoor valves and leave the outdoor ones open as this will reduce pressure to and allow the water to expand safely.
