The customer:

Metro Rod started delivering drainage services for Costa Coffee in 2019 via a Facilities Management company. Since February 2020, following a rigorous selection process, Metro Rod has been dealing with Costa Coffee directly. Originally servicing approximately 600 locations, which are directly owned by Costa Coffee, covering Scotland, North East, West Yorkshire and Cumbria.

The work provided:

The services delivered include, high-pressure water jetting, pipework descales and general drainage issues. Metro Rod also provides reactive work for any leaks, blockages or flooding and has recently become Costa Coffee’s preferred contractor for pump work, including all pump maintenance and repairs.

As a supplier of Costa Coffee, Metro Rod has challenging SLA and KPI standards to meet and do so by using bespoke tools such as their management capabilities of the works management system, Vision, which feeds directly into the Concerto system used by Costa Coffee. In addition to the capabilities of their on-site engineers, communication with Costa Coffee’s on-site team and information via their mobile devices. Costa Coffee and Metro Rod have also arranged a delegated authority which allows work up to a capped amount to take place immediately, enabling a first-time fix without impacting Costa Coffee’s services.

Costa Coffee has a national need for regular pump maintenance and replacements, due to this Metro Rod has mobilised stock and supply of pumps and pump parts at each depot to ensure that there are no delays to works and required servicing. Metro Rod’s flexibility and ability to create bespoke services to deliver the work has helped us develop our relationship with Costa Coffee into a working partnership. Communication with all stakeholders has been key in establishing a preferred system practice.

As a way of sharing knowledge concerning safe systems of working, Metro Rod has created a bespoke video training tool for all Costa Coffee stakeholders on how to safely troubleshoot problems with pumps such as isolating. This is to prevent damage to existing assets while the Metro Rod engineer mobilises to attend to works. This has both empowered our client and reduced asset replacement.
