FAT DOWN THE SINK? MONEY DOWN THE DRAIN! | Metro Rod Liverpool Warrington

FAT DOWN THE SINK? MONEY DOWN THE DRAIN! | Metro Rod Liverpool Warrington

In case you weren't already aware, today is Pancake Day!

Whether you call it Pancake Day, Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Tuesday or Mardi Gras (apparently some people do!). I'm sure that we can all agree that those yummy pieces of batter washed down with lemon, sugar, chocolate spread or whatever your topping of choice are an absolute TREAT!  Traditionally the day before Lent begins and a reason to use up all of the spare eggs, milk and flour in the home but now, in my house anyway, it's just an excuse to eat chocolate spread out of the jar!

HOWEVER, what about the washing up?!

As usual Metro Rod want to push home the message that fats should not be disposed of down the sink. They can cause localised blockages in your own sink or, if you're lucky enough for it not to affect you on your property the fats will move along the line, into the mains and contribute to the fatbergs that are becoming so much more common these days.  Even us here in Liverpool have our own fatberg now, as reported on by the BBC last month.  Although the mains sewers that we have locally in Liverpool, Warrington and our surrounding areas were well built they just weren't designed for the absolute rubbish that is disposed down them these days.

What should I do with my fats then?

As tempting as it is to just wash it down your sink or drain DON'T!  United Utilities have some great hints and tips on their page in regards to disposing of household fats and oils.  These include;

  • Allow oils and fats to cool after cooking and scrape them into a bin, once cooled.
  • Emptying food scraps into the bin, feeding them to birds or composting them.
  • Investing in a strainer to fit over your plug to stop any food scraps going where they shouldn't!

So, enjoy your pancakes today but remember to please dispose of the left overs and fats in the correct way!  However, if you do encounter any problems with blocked sinks after your pancakes, or indeed any drainage problems in any part of your home or business then our engineers are always on call and always available to fix any problems!
