Description of works
In 2024, Metro Rod Newport, Hereford, Gloucester and Cardiff was enlisted to carry out extensive root-cutting work on approximately 500 metres of 225mm VC main sewer for Herberts Wood in association with Welsh Water.
Due to access difficulties, 2 remote jetting reels carrying a combined total of 600 metres of jetting hose were required to carry out jetting from multiple manhole locations in the dense woodland area. A specialist ENZ chain flail root-cutting nozzle was used to remove thick root buildup. After identifying several defects throughout the 500 metres of pipework multiple UV lining repairs were proposed as the best method of repair.
The installation was carried out by a team of 8 engineers over 12 days on-site.
The first two days were spent mobilising all working areas, a staff welfare unit was also positioned on site where all daily briefings, safety conversations and inductions took place. Our work also involved the movement of equipment with the use of a telehandler and dumper due to the gradient and uneven nature of the terrain. Two 6inch diesel pumps were used throughout our work along with over 140 metres of suction bagging to divert and over-pump the main sewer to the nearest accessible downstream manhole.
12 different lining repairs were installed over 8 days ranging in distances from 40 – 80 metres in length. In total over 500 metres of Magma Flex glass reinforced liner was installed with the use of a Speedylight + UV LED light train.
As a result of the amount of rubbish spotted in the area, our engineers felt the need to carry out litter-picking in the woodland. Two members of staff from the team of 8 were allocated to clear the rubbish over 2 days, resulting in over 16 bags of rubbish being collected as well as a television, microwave, a printer and several traffic cones.
Health and Safety Considerations
A pre-start briefing was carried out by the designated supervisor. This briefing consisted of a review of all risk assessments and method statements applicable for the work being carried out.
A safety conversation was held with all engineers prior to the commencement of work each day, the topics covered were relevant to the work being carried out and included, slips, trips, falls – manual handling – working in confined spaces.
All staff were wearing the appropriate PPE for the tasks being carried out.
