HOW TO DEAL WITH DRAINS IN THE HOT WEATHER – METRO ROD BIRMINGHAM

While we enjoy the summer sun, it’s important we don’t forget about our drains as they can experience quite a few problems in the summer, which are outlined below.

The last thing you’re going to want to deal with when you’re trying to enjoy the sun are drainage problems. In the heat our drains can be subject to damage, so here are a few things that can go wrong in the sun and how best to avoid them.

Leaking pipes

When pipes start to leak, not only is it a waste of water, but you’ll see higher water bills and you’ll need to have repairs done which requires calling out a professional. In summer its not uncommon to see an increase in leaking pipes, as they are more likely to crack and leak when under more use and strain. During the hotter dry months you are more likely to be using hosepipes, sprinklers and filling up pools which all put more strain on your water mains pipes. So to help ease a bit of pressure of your mains water, we recommend using a water butt, or something similar, so that you can store rainwater from earlier in the year and use that for your garden instead.

Blocked drains

Blocked drains anytime of the year are a pain, but in summer when the sun is out , it can make it an especially smelly problem. Drains that become blocked due to pieces of food, coffee granules, fat, oil and grease will start to smell bad due to the extra heat from the sun which is not pleasant. While there are a number of things you can do to unblock drains, we find prevention is better than a cure. So try and avoid washing food scraps down the sink, and use drain catchers which will catch bits of food and hair in your showers, thus helping prevent blocked drains.

Hot plastic pipes

A lot of our pipes are made out of plastic, and these pipes that are outside and in the constant hot sun can become damaged and cracked as the UV light from the sun makes them brittle. When pipes crack they can start leaking and rupture which is another problem in itself.

The pipes and drains underground are also subject to damaged due to the sun. During spells of dry hot weather, the ground becomes hard and can crack which consequently puts pressure on the pipes underneath, adding to their strain and damaging them.
