Jack Dennis, 22, has been an apprentice with Metro Rod Mid Lancs for six months.
Jack, how did you get into your Metro Rod apprenticeship?
I chose my Metro Rod apprenticeship as I had already completed some temporary work for them in the past and I loved my time there. I felt like this was a great way to start working at Metro Rod again whilst gaining drainage qualifications at the same time.
What were you doing before this apprenticeship?
Before starting at Metro Rod full time, I was working as a groundworker for a local company.
Why did you choose a career in drainage?
I much prefer hands-on work and had gained some experience of what the role entailed in my temporary position here at Metro Rod Mid Lancs. I knew I loved the variety that each day brings.
So why did you choose Metro Rod?
I chose Metro Rod as I believe it’s the only drainage company offering an apprenticeship, plus I felt that it was an extremely supportive organisation in the short time I was there previously which is something that was really important to me with a new baby on the way.
What does your general day-to-day job entail?
My days at Metro Rod are always so varied and I get to be hands-on with so many different services. I have been helping to dig up drains as well as repairing and replacing damaged drains.
What’s the best thing about your apprenticeship?
I love the fact that I am earning whilst I am learning. There are lots of excellent things about my apprenticeship - learning something new every day, being part of a team, plus working alongside a really friendly and supportive group of people. I love the variety of work and last but not least the fantastic opportunity to be a qualified drainage engineer at the end of the two years. In fact, I love it so much that I have referred a couple of my friends to Metro Rod for the apprentice opportunities due to how good I feel the scheme is and how much I am enjoying it!
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I see myself as a senior engineer or in the office as I feel with the right attitude and mindset alongside the fantastic training opportunities Metro Rod offers, I will be able to go far.
