WET WIPES VS. TOILETS - wet wipes always win.
Research from the Water Research Centre (WRC) has shown that over 75% of drain blockages are made up of wet wipes. Wet wipes are insoluble, non-biodegradable solids which when flushed can clog up your drains. The disposal of wet wipes being flushed down the toilet not only causes blockages but is also starting to create an environmental emergency.
Unfortunately many wet wipes are stating on their packaging that they are ‘flushable’ but a BBC report revealed that there are in fact no wet wipes that pass the water industry’s disintegration tests. So while you may see them flush down the toilet, they wont disintegrate in the water and instead cling onto the walls of pipes which then build up to a blocked toilet.
Many producers of ‘flushable’ wet wipes insist that they have met the criteria needed to use the ‘fine to flush’ logo. However, now the only place that these tests can be carried out, if they wish to gain the certification, is at a WRC testing facility to ensure they are in fact up to standard.
The impact wet wipes have in your home
Across the UK households will use a variety of different wipes, from makeup wipes, to surface cleaning wipes to baby wipes. The way of disposal is the same for all of these: BIN IT, DON’T FLUSH IT. Wipes that are flushed quickly join up with over dirt, debris, grease and fat (which also shouldn’t be washed down the drain) to create potentially huge blockages called fatbergs.
To save yourself from a blocked drain its best to follow the WRC’s advice that we only ever flush the 3 Ps - Poo, Pee and Paper.
