The drop in temperature and cold weather can have adverse effects on your drains causing them to become damaged.
Metro Rod Birmingham know how much we all rely on our drains and this winter will be no different. With the government issuing lockdowns for the foreseeable future we will all be using our drains a lot more than usual, so it is vital we keep them maintained and working. Winter can be a difficult time for our drains causing them to become cracked and damaged.
The drop in temperature means that water left inside your drains and pipes can freeze and as water freezes it will expand and when this happens in your pipes you are at risk of serious damage. The expanding ice puts pressure on your pipes causing them to crack and fracture. You should pay special attention to the pipes that are exposed or outside which don’t get the benefits of heating. With these issues in mind, you should be preparing for these cold spells and here is how you can stop the cold getting to your drains.
Insulate
To help prevent your drains and pipes from freezing over and being left damaged, you should look into the different ways you can insulate the exposed pipes. Not only will the insulation prevent your pipes from freezing, but it will also help make your property more energy efficient.
You can find relatively cheap and effective insulation in most DIY shops, the circular foam tubing works well as you can just place it around the pipes. Heat tape is a second option that you might find works well.
Latent Heating
We also recommend keeping your heating on a low level over winter to keep it circulating around the pipes. This shouldn’t make your energy bill much higher either as the constant low heat is more efficient compared to stop-start periods of heating.
Be Aware of Draughts
Small gaps around doors and windows can cool the room down quickly and increase you chances of the pipes freezing. This is especially true in garages for example where you might have a few exposed pipes. Plug these gaps as best as you can to help keep the warmth in your home or business to prevent unnecessary freezing.
