Breaking Barriers in Operations Management
Amber Schoolden’s journey into operations wasn’t planned, but it turned out to be the perfect fit. Leaving college early, she started in a contact centre role within the drainage industry, initially drawn to the job for its regular hours. What started as a practical choice soon became a career built on problem-solving, leadership, and a passion for customer service.
“I’ve always enjoyed finding solutions and making a real difference. That’s what drives me every day.”
Amber’s ability to learn quickly and take on new challenges led to rapid career progression, including training a franchise network at a young age. Now, as an Operations Manager, Amber is a key figure supporting Metro Rod business owners.
Finding Her Voice in a Male-Dominated Industry
Working in operations and drainage, traditionally male-dominated areas, came with its challenges. Earning respect and being heard took determination.
“One of the biggest challenges has been ensuring my voice is heard. I overcame this by staying confident in my abilities, having open conversations, and standing by what I believe in.”
Her approach has been simple but effective: confidence, honesty, and a willingness to learn.
“I’ve never been afraid to say, ‘I don’t know, but I’ll find out.’ Knowledge is important but so is being open and adaptable.”
Balancing Career and Motherhood
A defining achievement for Amber has been reaching a leadership role while balancing life as a working mother.
“Success to me is about growth and making a meaningful impact but also being present for my daughter. I want her to see that success isn’t just about the result, but about resilience and learning along the way.”
Her ability to navigate both career and family life has made her an advocate for supporting women in leadership roles.
Advice for Women in Leadership
Amber encourages women in the industry to step up, take opportunities, and push past self-doubt.
“Women often feel they need to prove themselves more, but the reality is, you are already capable. Take up space, have the difficult conversations, and embrace challenges, it’s how you grow.”
“There will be setbacks and challenges, but staying positive and learning from them is key. Surround yourself with a strong support system, both personally and professionally.”
Shaping the Future for Women in the Industry
“We’re seeing more women stepping into leadership roles, and that visibility is inspiring the next generation. Diverse leadership isn’t just good for business, it’s good for innovation and growth.”
“Keep challenging the status quo, support one another, and stay true to yourself.”
