From Call Centre to Leadership: Amy Perry’s Journey of Growth

Amy Perry’s career at Metro Rod & Metro Plumb began unexpectedly. What started as a temporary role in a call centre soon turned into a long-term career. Initially planning to travel, Amy instead found herself drawn to the challenges of the business and quickly moved up the ranks. Just five months in, she secured her first promotion, and nearly a decade later, she continues to thrive in an ever-evolving company. Today, her role focuses on shaping processes, implementing technological advancements, and ensuring top-tier service for customers, franchisees, and staff.

Overcoming Self-Doubt in a Professional Setting

Amy identifies confidence as one of the biggest challenges she faced in her career. Early on, she often doubted herself, assuming those who spoke with certainty must be correct. Over time, she realised that confidence does not always equate to being correct. By actively participating in discussions and voicing her opinions, she found her perspective was valuable. Her journey highlights an important lesson for women in the workplace, confidence is built through experience and engagement.

Inspired by Authentic Leadership

Amy credits much of her inspiration to colleagues who have embraced growth while remaining approachable and grounded. Their ability to evolve and adapt, even in senior roles, has reinforced her belief that learning is a lifelong journey.

Achievements That Define Her Career

Reflecting on her career, Amy takes pride in her overall progression. From feeling nervous making phone calls to leading business improvements and collaborating with people across all levels, her journey is a testament to perseverance and professional growth. Each challenge has contributed to her development, shaping her into the leader she is today.

Supporting Women in the Industry

Amy remains humble about her impact but hopes that by sharing her experiences and encouraging confidence in other women, she has helped pave the way for future leaders. While she may feel she is only just getting started in changing the landscape, she is committed to making a meaningful difference as she continues to grow in her role.

Advice for Women Seeking Leadership Roles

Amy’s advice is straightforward:

“Master your current role while you have the time to do so because the knowledge you gain will be invaluable for future opportunities. She encourages women to seize new opportunities without fear of failure, as each experience, whether successful or not, provides a valuable learning opportunity. Confidence grows with experience, it’s important to learn to trust yourself.”

Defining Success

Amy’s definition of success has evolved. Initially, simply being in a meeting felt like an achievement. Now, success means having the autonomy to make meaningful contributions, being recognised for her expertise, and continuously pushing herself with new challenges. “true success is not just about reaching milestones but about sustained growth and trust in my capabilities”.

The Most Important Lesson Learned

One of the most powerful lessons Amy has learned is the importance of treating others with respect, regardless of their position. As the workplace continues to integrate AI and technological advancements, strong communication and mutual support remain fundamental to success.

Words of Wisdom: “Fake It ‘Til You Make It”

Amy firmly believes in the power of confidence. While she acknowledges the phrase “Fake it ‘til you make it” can be misunderstood, she views it as an encouragement to step outside of your comfort zone.

“It’s about projecting confidence while learning and growing into the role. By adopting a growth mindset and trusting in one’s potential, women can achieve far more than they initially believe possible.”
