Balancing Business, Family, and Success
Jo Yates’ career has always been rooted in sales and service. Before joining Metro Rod, she worked in retail management for a luxury brand before becoming a regional manager for a premium skincare company. Her expertise in team management, sales, and building strong relationships laid the foundation for her eventual move into franchising.
In 2012, Jo made a significant career shift, stepping away from her corporate role to support her husband, Mike, in managing their fast-growing Metro Rod franchise. What started as a temporary role soon became a long-term career, and today, Jo and Mike share equal responsibility for the business. Together, they have built a thriving drainage company with over 20 employees while also balancing a busy family life with three children.
Overcoming Challenges and Redefining Work-Life Balance
Unlike many women in male-dominated industries, Jo hasn’t felt the common challenges due to her gender. Moving from a predominantly female work environment into the male-dominated drainage sector, she has faced the same business pressures as any entrepreneur. However, she acknowledges that balancing motherhood with running a business can be a challenge, especially when work commitments clash with family events.
“The guilty feelings creep in when you miss a parents' evening or sports day, she admits, but I balance that with the flexibility my role gives me to be there at other times.”
Jo credits much of her ability to manage work and family life to the partnership she shares with her husband. “We share all responsibilities equally, both at home and in the business. If one of us is tied up with work, the other takes care of the school runs, football, and dance classes. We understand each other’s pressures, and we support each other through it.”
Inspired by Teamwork and Family
For Jo, inspiration comes from the people around her.
“I’m motivated every day by my team. We’ve surrounded ourselves with good people, and their jobs provide for their families. That drives me to keep pushing forward,” she shares. “And, of course, my family. The flexibility I have in my role means I can be there for my children’s big moments, and that’s incredibly important to me.”
Proudest Achievements
Jo’s proudest career achievement? “Successfully working alongside my husband for over 12 years—without a divorce!”
Beyond that, she takes pride in the business’s longevity and resilience. “Surviving in business since 2009, getting through COVID, and retaining a strong team is something I’m really proud of.”
A standout moment came in November 2024 when Metro Rod Lancashire won the ‘Trade Business of the Year’ award at the Wigan Business Awards. “Drainage isn’t a trade that typically gets recognition, so this was a huge moment for us and our team,” she says.
Looking to the Future
Jo is excited about the next chapter of Metro Rod Lancashire. “We’re focusing on developing our existing team and expanding our office staff to support our next phase of growth. The future looks bright.”
Words of Advice for Women in Business
Jo’s advice for women looking to succeed in business is simple:
“Find a way to balance what’s important to you. Whether it’s family, career, or both, there is a way to make it work. Surround yourself with good people, share responsibilities, and support each other.”
“Most importantly, don’t be afraid to challenge expectations. Hard work, commitment, and flexibility are what drive success, not gender.”
