As National Apprenticeship Week 2020 draws to an end, we’ve taken the opportunity to sit down with both of our apprentices. Take a moment to reflect on their first few months with Metro Rod before they take on the theme of national apprenticeship week 'Look Beyond'.
Meeting Matthew
16-year-old Matthew Jones joined Metro Rod in September 2019. Having finished his GCSE’s in the summer he was unsure about the opportunities available to him. Mathew favoured the vocational option and was sold on the opportunity to become a Metro Rod apprentice. Prior to making this decision, he considered pursuing his A levels and studying for a BTEC extended diploma. However, he decided against both. Matthew was drawn to the variety on offer as a drainage apprentice and has relished all opportunities he has been given so far.
Matthew commented:
“From day one I have been made to feel a part of the team at Metro Rod. Noel, my engineer mentor has spent quality time with me on a weekly basis showing me all aspects of drainage. In addition to the practical application of the job I have received support and personal development opportunities from my learning tutor, Craig. This was mainly through a series of interactive presentations and e-learning modules.”
Matthew spoke to a few pupils from various schools. Throughout the STEM event, Matthew told of his dilemma to either stay on in school for his A-levels or to leave for an apprenticeship. The pupils really connected with his honest manner of speaking and how he finally made his decision after his research.
Getting to know Gethin
17-year-old Gethin Hale also joined the business in September 2019. He was keen to start his working career directly after completing his GCSE’s. Therefore, Gethin relished the opportunity to try his hand at all aspects of the drainage industry. During his time with the business, he has learned how to clear blockages, survey pipework, trace defects above the ground, amongst many other things.
Gethin is keen to continue to develop his skills and knowledge base:
“I have had the dream start with Metro Rod, everyone has been so welcoming. No two days are the same, we could be clearing blockages one day, cleaning guttering the next, or working on any of the 3 tankers that the business have. To sum up, I couldn’t have asked to a better start to my working career.”
At the STEM event, Gethin talked through some of the pupil's fears of leaving school for an apprenticeship. Proving that there's no need to stay in school to prove your academic skills but instead, evolving on the skill you want to have and continue throughout your career.
