Metro Rod recently won a tender to provide drainage services to Bron Afon Community Housing.
Our work with the community housing operations began in January 2017. Subsequently, we have responded to well over 100 drainage problems to date, that range across Torfaen, for example:
- Cwmbran,
- Pontypool
- Blaenavon
What is Bron Afon Community Housing?
Bron Afon is a social enterprise that is run by staff and members. The community has received £377,000 in funding from the Welsh Government’s Integrated Care Fund. Their work covers construction, community regeneration, support and so much more.
The community has been around since 31 March 2008 when Torfaen Council tenants voted for Bron Afon to be their new landlord. Since then we have been bringing their homes up to the Welsh Housing Quality Standard.
Meanwhile, since 2008, membership has grown to over 1,800 people. Therefore, making them one of the largest co-operatives in the country.
Bron Afon have built 36 homes in 2018/19. Our aim is to have built 450 new homes by the end of 2023.
What work do we provide for them?
Since winning the tender to receive and attend to all works regarding Bron Afon, we have noticed a pattern to what is usually asked for.
For instance:
- Reactive unblocks- This means that these aren't preplanned but instead come in daily. Unblocks are usually inside jobs that are handled by a plumber.
- CCTV surveys - CCTV surveys are to clarify when engineers use a robot to check the drain for any blockages that might need to be dealt with differently.
- Structural repairs- These come in when required. Therefore, depending on the house, person and their needs aren't as frequently needed or asked for. Although these must be booked in advance t make sure all equipment and parts are available to engineers.
- Excavations- Again these are asked for when necessary, so aren't needed often. Excavations include when an engineer must go underground to check or recorrect a pipe.
