Owning Franchising
Tracey Cockerton’s career journey is a testament to adaptability, resilience, and a belief in her own value. Starting out as a speaker agent in London, she spent a decade working with some of the world’s most high-profile politicians and business leaders. It was an intense and fast-paced environment, particularly for an 18-year-old navigating the corporate world. But those early experiences taught her how to multitask under pressure, stand her ground, and recognise her worth, lessons that would shape the rest of her career.
Sales is never easy. Picking up the phone and facing rejection is a challenge that doesn’t disappear with experience. However, Tracey learned early on that confidence and expertise are powerful tools. Understanding her subject better than the person she’s selling to, gives her an edge, turning potential rejection into opportunity.
Her career then took a new direction as she ran a construction company, handling everything from finances and payroll to contract negotiations and client management. This hands-on business experience gave her a deep understanding of operations, leadership, and problem-solving.
Finding franchising, a move that would define the next phase of her career. Thanks to Craig Henthorn, she joined as an Operational Manager for an international B2B franchise, where she honed her ability to engage diverse audiences across different languages and cultures. Now, as Franchise Sales Manager for Metro Rod, Metro Plumb, and Filta, Tracey’s role is about more than selling franchises; it’s about matching ambitious individuals with the right business opportunity and helping them unlock their full potential.
Overcoming Challenges as a Woman in Business
One of the biggest obstacles Tracey has faced in her career is not being heard. Early on, she assumed that the loudest voice in the room was the one with the best ideas. Over time, she realised that wasn’t necessarily the case. “True leadership comes from making space for others and valuing different perspectives”.
“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve made a suggestion, only for it to be repeated back by a male colleague and recognised as brilliant. It’s infuriating, but I refuse to let it silence me. I keep speaking up, and I make sure to support others in doing the same.”
Tracey continues to work on ensuring her voice is heard, while also championing an environment where others, especially women, can confidently contribute their ideas.
Inspired by Strong Leadership
One of Tracey’s biggest inspirations is Julia Choudhury, a leading figure in finance and acquisitions. In an industry traditionally dominated by men, Julia has built a phenomenal career while maintaining a strong commitment to mentorship and inclusion.
“She speaks openly about her journey, shares her knowledge, and despite being under immense pressure, makes time to uplift the women around her. She’s created a culture of opportunity, and I admire the way she leads with both confidence and generosity.”
Career Highlights and Achievements
Among Tracey’s proudest career achievements in recent years are:
- Selling more than £6m worth franchises for Metro Rod
- Building the Metro Plumb franchise network from the ground up
Both require resilience, strategic thinking, and a strong belief in the value of what she was offering.
Advice for Women Aspiring to be in Leadership roles
Tracey’s key piece of advice? “Confidence is everything”.
“It might look like everyone around you has it all figured out, but scratch the surface, and you’ll find that everyone has doubts and struggles. Understanding that levels the playing field. No one is inherently better than you, they just have different experiences. Own yours and use it to your advantage.”
She also emphasises the importance of continual learning and mastering your craft. “Sincere expertise builds an inner confidence that no one, can take away”.
Redefining Success
For years, Tracey chased recognition, climbing the corporate ladder and waiting for validation. But her perspective on success has shifted.
“I’ve learned to celebrate my wins on my own terms. Success, to me, is about setting goals, achieving them, and being my own biggest champion. If I bring my best to the table every day, I trust that the right people will notice.”
Lessons in Leadership
One of the most powerful lessons Tracey has learned is that mastering your area of expertise gives you unshakable confidence. “No matter the environment, when you truly know your subject inside and out, you hold the power in the conversation”.
The Future for Women in Franchising
Tracey believes that while there are still challenges for women in franchising, the key to progress is focusing on what’s within your control.
“You can’t control how others behave, but you can control how you respond. Focus on what’s within your power. Women bring a unique set of strengths to every space we step into. Find yours and own it.”
