Do Old Drains Get Blocked Easily?

Yes, old drains can get blocked easily due to several factors:

1. Wear and Tear: Over time, pipes can deteriorate, leading to cracks and corrosion that can trap debris.
2. Build-up: Years of accumulated grease, soap scum, hair, and other debris can gradually narrow the pipes.
3. Tree Roots: Older pipes are more susceptible to invasion by tree roots seeking moisture, causing blockages and damage.
4. Material Degradation: Older materials like clay or cast iron can break down and become rough inside, catching debris more easily.

Regular maintenance and inspections can help mitigate these issues and keep old drains functioning properly.

How Do I Deal With My Shower Backing Up?

If your shower is backing up, here’s how to deal with it:

1. Clear the Drain: Remove the drain cover and use a drain snake or a bent wire hanger to remove any visible hair or debris.
2. Plunge: Use a plunger to try to dislodge the blockage. Ensure there’s enough water in the shower to cover the plunger’s base.
3. Chemical Cleaners: Use a commercial drain cleaner or a homemade mixture of baking soda and vinegar, followed by hot water.
4. Call a Professional: If these steps don’t work, contact a professional plumber or a drainage service like Metro Rod for help.

Any Tips on Preventing a Blocked Drain in the Bathroom?

Here are some tips for preventing a blocked drain in the bathroom:

Use Drain Covers: Install strainers or screens to catch hair, soap scum, and other debris.
Regular Cleaning: Clean the drain covers regularly to prevent build-up.
Avoid Grease: Keep oils and greasy substances out of the drains as they can solidify and cause blockages.
Hot Water Flush: Pour hot water down the drain weekly to help dissolve soap scum and other residues.
Avoid Chemicals: Minimise the use of chemical drain cleaners which can damage pipes over time.

Regular maintenance and mindfulness can help keep bathroom drains clear.

Why Are Blocked Drains An Issue?

Blocked drains are a significant issue for several reasons:

Clogged drains are a problem because they can cause health risks, damage, unpleasant odours, inconvenience, and structural damage. It’s important to address blockages promptly and maintain drains regularly to prevent these issues.

What Are Some Modern Drain Unblocking Practices?

Metro Rod Exeter utilises advanced drain unblocking practices such as high-pressure water jetting, electro-mechanical cleaning, and CCTV surveys for thorough inspection of the drainage system. These methods ensure efficient and comprehensive solutions for clearing blockages and maintaining the integrity of drainage systems.

How Do I Deal With a Blocked Toilet?

Dealing with a blocked toilet can be stressful, but there are a few steps you can take to address the issue.

First, try using a plunger to dislodge the blockage. If that doesn’t work, you can try using a plumbing snake to break up and remove the blockage. Alternatively, pouring hot water and dish soap into the toilet bowl can sometimes help break down the blockage.

If these methods don’t work, it’s best to contact Metro Rod to safely and effectively resolve the blockage.

We Are Buying/Selling A Property, Can You Do A CCTV Survey?

Of course! Metro Rod can arrange for a CCTV survey as part of the property buying/selling process. This will provide a detailed inspection of the property’s drainage system, helping to identify any potential issues and ensure everything is in good condition.

Wet Wipes Blocking Drains Across The UK & Exeter

It was estimated by Euromonitor that we use between 1,500 and 2,250 wipes per child from the day they are born to the age of three. It’s not just baby wipes that are the culprits, but also the more recent trend for anti-bac, floor, glass, make-up – you name it, if it’s something you can clean, there will be a wipe for the job, and these wipes are then all too often simply flushed down the loo. This is causing chaos around the country, as more and more drains get blocked due to the amount of wet wipes passing through them.

Water UK – the trade body representing all the main water and sewerage companies in the UK, recently reported that wipes make up 93% of the materials that cause sewer blockages. We here at Metro Rod Exeter would like to encourage people to pay attention to what they are putting down their drains.

We work with many restaurants, cafes, hotels, schools and pubs in Exeter where large amounts of cooking takes place, and are seeing the problems that the build up of fat and grease can cause in the drains on a far more regular basis, causing more blocked drains and damaged drains to occur. We are also seeing more domestic blockages being caused through this build up with wipes being added in to the mix.

Our engineers deal with blockages caused in this way on an almost daily basis, and it only seems to be getting worse. We are obviously able to deal with this kind of blockage using techniques such as high-pressure jetting to clear any build up and even drainage repair if necessary, but we’d also like to help educate the nation and try and lessen the damage caused in this way.

Feel free to get in contact with us if you have any question or are suffering from blocked drain issues here in Exeter.
